Big Red on Top!

Big RedCornell University, my alma mater, is not known for its sports, even though it has had good soccer teams and hockey teams at different times over the last 15 years. But since I first attended Cornell in the fall of 1993 I have never known it to have a good basketball team (or football or baseball team – but that’s not the point of this post).

However I read today that Cornell is on the verge of winning the Ivy League. Two more wins (or one win and a Brown loss) and they have clinch the Ivy Title and earn entry into the NCAA Tournament.

I think it was the late 80′s the last time Princeton or Penn did not represent the Ivy in the tourney.

I would love for Cornell to advance into the second round of the tourney! It won’t be easy for an Ivy team, but it would be pretty exciting for this Cornell Alum despite the fact that I haven’t followed Cornell sports at all since graduating.

Cornell was so bad when I was in college I wrote an article quoting their coach’s hilariously sad comments on the team.

He said things like
“When you’re playing a good basketball team and you’re a bad basketball team and if you give up some early possessions things begin to snowball.”
and
“We’re not a good team. For whatever extra motivation we need, we’ll take it. But when you’re a good team – which we are not – then all those extraneous factor’s are not neccessary.”
and
“I gotta go inside”

This article was the only funny thing I contributed to Cornell’s humor magazine the two years I was on the staff. This humor magazine, the Cornell Lunatic, is celebrating it’s 30th Anniversary!
